DIRECTOR OF BARNES MUSIC & TEACHER OF CLARINET AND SAXOPHONE
Deciding to take lessons with Rod Barnes, means that you are deciding to take lesson with the master. Rod has over 30 years of teaching experience and 40+ years of performance experience. Rod has taught MANY students who have gone on to play professionally, whether it be classical or jazz, and others who have also gone on to become teachers themselves.
If you want to learn properly, take your playing to the next level or make clarinet/saxophone your profession, then come and see Rod so you can achieve your goals.
Rod has also established a jazz venue in Newcastle, The Dungeon. It annually features international, national and local jazz acts. It is an all ages venue that Rod set up so that his students could see jazz live, and has grown into much more than this. This venue is also where the Barnes Music student concerts take place.
"I've had a love affair with my clarinet for 50 years. I can remember seeing an ad in a Music Maker magazine for a clarinet, and being instantly drawn to it. Then I heard recordings of people like Benny Goodman and Woody Herman, and was lucky enough to see Don Burrows perform live."
Even studying at university and working for a while as an architect couldn’t wipe out the absolute attraction of music. So in 1980, Rod finally succumbed and became a full-time musician/teacher, which marked the beginning of 'Barnes Music".
"I’ve had the absolute privilege of playing all types of music – orchestral, chamber, solo, jazz, big band, and even playing baritone sax in my son and daughter's rock bands!"
Rod's students inspire him to always improve his own technique, performance and teaching ideas.
